Blizzard Issues Forced Name Changes, Beta Bans Over Naming Violations
Blizzard has begun forcibly renaming and, in some cases, removing Beta access from WoW: Forever players who violated character naming policies tied to the new dual-name system. The move has sparked debate among testers even as Blizzard says only 0.18% of names resulted in a ban.

In an official post on 2026-09-24, Blizzard community manager Fwoibles said the company is "in the process of issuing forced name changes" to characters violating naming policies established during the Forever Beta. Some users who created names "far outside" the Code of Conduct have had Beta access removed entirely. Blizzard noted the new dual-name system let players get creative, but some revealed too much personal information. The World of Warcraft Development team reviewed each case individually, and Blizzard confirmed Customer Service will not assist with appeals.
New Enforcement System Coming
Blizzard also announced that an automated system for enforcing naming standards will be coming online "very shortly." Testers were explicitly warned not to try to "test" this system, as doing so risks further action and loss of Beta access. Blizzard directed players to its Code of Conduct page for guidance on acceptable names, emphasizing that safety and inclusiveness remain a priority for the WoW team as the dual-name feature continues to be refined ahead of the game's November 4, 2026 launch.
Scale of Bans and Player Reaction
According to Wowhead, Senior Game Producer Tom Ellis commented that only 0.18% of names in the Beta resulted in a ban, suggesting the enforcement action affected a small fraction of the player base. However, Icy Veins reported that the naming crackdown has already "sparked backlash," with some players pushing back against Blizzard's approach to the new two-name system.
